Church of Madonna dei Panetti

The Church of Madonna dei Panetti is a small building with an unusually large historical role. Dating to the twelfth century, it is among the oldest surviving churches in lower Salento and served the medieval settlement of Celsorizzo. Before worship shifted towards the growing centre of Acquarica, this rural church was the parish focus for a community whose houses and daily life have largely vanished from the landscape.

Its modest scale and thick blocks of local tufa distinguish it from the ornate Baroque churches of the later towns. Inscriptions in the external masonry help establish its early date. The simple volume is most revealing when viewed together with the nearby fortified tower, Saint Nicholas chapel, dovecote and rock-cut oil-production spaces: sacred life stood within a working and defended agricultural settlement, not apart from it.

By the sixteenth century the old casale had declined and the parish role moved to Saint John the Baptist in Acquarica. Madonna dei Panetti remained as a landmark of the earlier landscape. Its survival gives visitors a rare chance to imagine the geography before the modern town consolidated—scattered rural communities linked by paths, fields, water sources, chapels and fortified farm buildings.
